What are the benefits of BCAA (Branched Chain Amino Acids) for Fat Loss?

This is a brief article to describe the potential positive effects of BCAA’s for fat loss.

Good supplements should be designed with effectiveness in mind. The physical components of essential amino acids are easily digestible using powder or capsule BCAA supplements. Many BCAA supplements contain little or no calories so it will add nutrient density to a calorie restricted diet.

Burning fat on a calorie restricted diet

This specific combination of essential amino acids provide energy and clean burning muscle nutrients.

Fat loss on a caloric restricted diet is more likely to be successful when it is low in sugar, alcohol, and processed foods. You should be plant strong as well.

When to take BCAA

There are several occasions but the best bang for the buck is around the workout period. So…

1. Take BCAA before/during/or/after the workout. I would take it about 15-30 minutes prior to a workout to let it digest. If I knew my workout was going to be long (more than 75 minutes), then I would sip on it to improve fitness gains.

2. During short eating windows and diet, BCAA can be a life saving nutrient for the good cells. In other words, say you decide to eat only between a 10 hour period in the day — you would probably lose weight. By consuming the BCAA’s during time of fasting (the other 14 hours), you will preserve cells which are capable of signaling the fat burning process. And let the fat burn baby.

Where to find it?

It’s everywhere.

Destroy fat with these three fitness tips

Fitness tips and techniques to burn fat faster

Here are a few tips to help you in the fat loss journey starting with…

1. Drink more water before meals

If you intend to burn fat, then the energy needs to be moving. Support the flow with H20. Water before meals is associated with fat loss in a study of adults.

2. Focus on the healthy internal gut bacteria

Kefir is a great example of a fermented food for fat loss and gut health. More than that, it can reduce allergic responses and make the immune system more efficient. Along with antioxidant effects, fermented foods provide powerful fat burning nutrients.

3. Run fast up hills (HIIT)

Running fast up hill is pure fat burn potential. Whether at first it is a jog, then a run until finally you decide to sprint. Getting up that incline is devastating for fat cells. The benefit of high intensity interval training is that MOST of the fat loss comes after the workout.

Why is Recovery more important than workouts for Fat Loss?

Power up your workouts

Many people will reach a fat-loss plateau if their workouts have no progression. You need progressive resistance techniques. You must strive to do more physical work in a shorter time period.

The body always seeks to adapt, therefore the work is never truly done.

Kneeling Pallof Press

Challenge in new ways, kneeling cable pallof press for core strength and stability

Always strive for more, while understanding that recovery is even more important than your workouts.

You will burn more fat outside of a workout

By focusing on recovery, you will burn more fat in the day than you could ever burn during a one hour workout session. Here are some practical recovery trips:

RECOVERY TIPS

  • Consume lean protein and ideally a nutrient dense carbohydrate within 0-60 minutes post-workout
    • example: eggs/beans, chicken/rice, protein powder/designer carbohydrate, etc
  • Move around and stay active
    • stretches (especially dynamic stretches), bodyweight squats and hip bridges, going for a brisk walk, outdoor activities, jumps/leaps or sports
  • Consume lean protein at every meal
    • feed the lean, simple as that
  • Prioritize sleep
    • examples: drink relaxing tea after dinner, minimize exposure to light in the hours before bed, try a melatonin if you are forced into a different sleep schedule (such as shift work), naps
  • Hydrate with water
  • Eat living food with active cultures and live probiotic bacteria
    • You want to support the symbiotic colonies that make your digestion even possible.
    • Having a healthy gut ecosystem affects all things human (from the smell of your feet, reproductive health, and even whether you’re more likely to burn additional fat)
    • Other option is eating pre-biotic (food that is pre-curser to the natural bacteria present from birth). Examples: ginger, banana, onions etc
  • REMEMBER: Muscle groups can take between 12-36 hours to recover and a big part depends on your lifestyle factors

I would always kick your butt in a workout and leave you destroyed, but unless the recovery is a priority for you then we have to possibly limit the intensity of your workouts.

Bonus: things that hurt recovery

  1. Alcohol
  2. No sleep
  3. Stress

If fat burn is your priority, avoid those and deal with it.

Thanks for reading people, stay tuned..

Orangetheory Fitness attacks the Big Climb 2015, fights blood cancers

The Big Climb is about Elevation

You must rise up. To rise up is to fight against cancer and there are many ways to do this.

Incline and vertical training for fat loss

There is something I can be passionate about for rising up. Working your way up the pull of gravity is key to the disease prevention lifestyle.

Disease prevention with incline training

Fat loss, muscle tone, and improved cardiovascular health can be achieved through a moderate-to-high intensity training regimen with fresh nutrition.

That’s why I captained the Big Climb 2015 Seattle team

The above picture was moments away from the starting stairwell to go up 69 stories in Seattle’s Columbia Tower.

A gray day won’t stop us now

Getting to the top is the inherent value, if the view is decent then bonus

Getting to the top is inherent in value, if the view was amazing then it would just be excess

Make it to the top!

Here is Seattle in all of its spring glory, I was happy to be catching my breath with this in sight

Here is Seattle on an inevitable day with the gray and I have sweat through my shirt just now

Congrats to the finishers

Woo feels good to finish! Rachel and Julianne celebrate

Not one of Seattle's finest days when it comes to views but still enough to appreciate

Take in the view and then let’s go eat something

Thoughts about the Climb 2015

This fundraising effort was rife with support from many individuals. I appreciate you all for that, and for being here reading this. Here are a few thoughts I have about the Big Climb 2015

  • Your heart is the most important muscle and you should eat to support it
  • When I consume a beetroot, carrot, kale juice, it’s because I feel like it helps me breathe better
  • Breath in through the nose, out through the mouth
  • Use your upper body and core strength to pull yourself up and to push through the turns
  • Core strength improves with progressive resistance training
  • Pump yourself up and do what it takes even if it means some self talk!
  • Do it again for next year

Our team will continue on. We celebrated at a Sunday Happy Hour downtown and then walked home thanks to our city dwelling lifestyles.

Later that day

The spring day in Seattle departed with rays through lingering levels of moisture

When Women train Heavy, will you Bulk Up or LEAN OUT? Fat Loss Talk

The cultural roles and expectations that we face can make us feel self critical

I have no doubt that people who stay lean and healthy all year round are those who also surround themselves with similar people. So in that sense of culture, I believe that people with healthy mindsets are a benefit of culture for fat loss. At the same time, the images on TV and mass media are certainly causing shifts in the discussion of our bodies.

Seems that fit people share similar activities

Seems that fit people share similar activities

How does this all play into what it is to have a healthy body image?

Well, let’s ask what is it to have healthy body image?

  • Wake up knowing you will take on the day, it will not take on you
  • Feels or seeks to feel intrinsic reasons to exercise
  • Finds way to challenge what the body is truly capable of physically and consequently mentally, emotionally
  • Places a high value of quality of food for both internal and external human benefit

It’s ultimately not about the body fat %. It’s not about six pack abs or firm buttocks. It’s about the you, the person.

Should Women Lift Heavy?

First, let’s focus on the goal of an individual. Not all women should lift heavy particularly if the exercise is contraindicated from orthopedic needs or for some other factor that precludes strength development.

Using a reasonable program, lifting progressively heavier weights has many benefits:

Progressive resistance on a body weight exercise

Progressive resistance on a body weight exercise

  • Increased calorie burn at rest
  • Develops the Fast Twitch muscle fibers which allow you to burn even more calories while exercising
  • Makes you stronger, more fit person
  • Promotes healthy metabolism, especially in the area of systemic glucose management and insulin resistance
  • Tends to put you in a good mood, feeling of accomplishments, actual achievements
  • Focuses on performance, what the body can do, a healthy perspective

There are many established benefits of lifting heavy weights for women. It’s not my case to argue whether or not you want to use heavier weights, but in the case that you do want to see the benefits, then you are at the right place.

All women have different response to exercise and nutrition

Because of our genes and our environmental conditions (including what your mother ate and how well she slept), everybody has different responses to lifting progressively heavier weights. So I’ll keep it simple here.

Woman who lift heavier weights WILL DEFINITELY BURN MORE FAT…

In terms of bulking, there are two main factors at play:

1. How much food is being eaten; the quality of food consumed is just as important as the overall volume

I'm not sure what she eats, but I'd bet it's pretty balanced nutritionally

I’m not sure what she eats, but I’d bet it’s pretty balanced nutritionally

and..

2. The current hormonal status of the individual.

Let me elaborate on this for a moment. Just like in men, women have a range of testosterone and some women just naturally have more in their bodies. If this is the case, they may build muscle easier than other women. They may also be sexually aggressive but that is WAY beyond the scope of this.

On the other hand, diet can affect our hormones as well. Women who show a preference for frequent consumption of simple sugars, starches, alcohol, trans fats and other low quality foods are more likely to add “bulk” which is more visibly as fat mass.

Lift heavy to tone up and eat lean to stay lean

I'd wager she exercises too

I’d wager she exercises too

So it comes down to a discussion on body image

The worst reason to exercise is to look like somebody else. To have somebody’s butt or their legs or their arms.

You will never.

Best to focus on being you and accepting that exercise is your healing and you need it frequently.

Good luck all, thanks for reading
